■ Authors

 

Jason A. Colquitt is the William H. Willson Distinguished Chair in the Department of Management at the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business. He received his PhD from Michigan State University’s Eli Broad Graduate School of Management, and earned his BS in Psychology from Indiana University. He has taught organizational behavior and human resource management at the undergraduate, masters, and executive levels and has also taught research methods at the doctoral level. He has received awards for teaching excellence at both the undergraduate and executive levels.

Jason's research interests include organizational justice, trust, team effectiveness, and personality influences on task and learning performance. He has published more than 20 articles on these and other topics in Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, and Personnel Psychology. He is currently serving as the Editor-in-Chief for Academy of Management Journal and has served on a number of editorial boards, including Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Management, and International Journal of Conflict Management. He is a recipient of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology's Distinguished Early Career Contributions Award and the Cummings Scholar Award for early to mid-career achievement, sponsored by the Organizational Behavior division of the Academy of Management. He was also elected to be a Representative-at-Large for the Organizational Behavior division.

Jason enjoys spending time with his wife, Catherine, and three sons, Cameron, Riley, and Connor. His hobbies include playing basketball, playing the trumpet, watching movies, and rooting on (in no particular order) the Pacers, Colts, Cubs, Hoosiers, Spartans, Gators, and Bulldogs.

Jeffery A. LePine is the PetSmart Chair in Leadership in the Department of Management at Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business. He received his PhD in Organizational Behavior from the Eli Broad Graduate School of Management at Michigan State University. He also earned an MS in Management from Florida State University and a BS in Finance from the University of Connecticut. He has taught organizational behavior, human resource management, and management of groups and teams at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Jeff's research interests include team functioning and effectiveness, individual and team adaptation, citizenship behavior, voice, engagement, and occupational stress. He has published more than 20 articles on these and other topics in Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, and Personnel Psychology. He has served as Associate Editor of Academy of Management Review, and has served (or is currently serving) on the editorial boards of Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology. He is a recipient of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology's Distinguished Early Career Contributions Award and the Cummings Scholar Award for early to mid-career achievement, sponsored by the Organizational Behavior division of the Academy of Management. He was also elected to the Executive Committee of the Human Resource Division of the Academy of Management. Prior to earning his PhD, Jeff was an Officer in the U. S. Air Force.

Jeff spends most of his free time having fun with his wife Marcie, daughter Izzy, and son Eli. He also enjoys playing guitar, hiking in the desert, and restoring his GTO.

Michael J. Wesson is an associate professor in the Management Department at Texas A&M University's Mays Business School. He received his PhD from Michigan State University's Eli Broad Graduate School of Management. He also holds an MS in human resource management from Texas A&M University and a BBA from Baylor University. He has taught organizational behavior and human resource management- based classes at all levels, but currently spends most of his time teaching Mays MBAs, EMBAs and executive development at Texas A&M. He was awarded Texas A&M's Montague Center for Teaching Excellence Award.

Michael's research interests include organizational justice, goal-setting, organizational entry (employee recruitment, selection and socialization), person-organization fit, and compensation and benefits. His articles have been published in journals such as Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Academy of Management Review, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Applied Psychology and the Journal of Organizational Behavior and is an ad hoc reviewer for many others. He is active in the Academy of Management and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Prior to returning to school, Michael worked as a human resources manager for a Fortune 500 firm. He has served as a consultant to the automotive supplier, healthcare, oil and gas, and technology industries in areas dealing with recruiting, selection, onboarding, compensation, and turnover.

Michael spends most of his time trying to keep up with his wife Liesl and son Dylan. He is a self-admitted food and wine snob, home theater aficionado, and college sports addict (Gig'em Aggies!).

Now in its third edition, Colquitt-LePine-Wesson continues to offer a novel and innovative approach to teaching organizational behavior. The focus, tone, and organization of the book shows students that:

OB really matters - The book opens with two chapters barely covered in other texts: job performance and organizational commitment. Those topics are critical to managers and students alike, and represent two of the most critical outcomes in OB. Each successive chapter then links that chapter's topic back to those outcomes, illustrating why OB matters in today's organizations.

  • NEW Wraparound Cases ' The 3rd edition has been updated with new wraparound cases, which reflect current scenarios at companies that are relevant to today's student. New wraparound cases include: Facebook, Google, Hasbro and American Express

    New OB On Screen Features ' The authors have revised the OB On Screen Features throughout the text to reflect new examples from films. This continued feature helps students apply chapter concepts to situations they have likely seen in the movies. New OB On Screen Features include: The Social Network (featured on the book's cover), Up In the Air, Despicable Me, Sherlock Holmes and others.

    New OB At the Bookstore examples ' The authors have also added several new OB At the Bookstore examples. This feature links chapter content to mainstream, popular business books and helps the students put those books into a larger context. New book examples include: Drive, The Checklist Manifesto and Making Ideas Happen

    Chapter 5 - Stress now includes several new and revised examples to illustrate the stress process. For example, the stress experienced by call center operators is described in a way that reflects a more complete set of stressful demands. There are also new examples of companies that approach stress management in innovative ways.

    Chapter 10' Ability - To give students a better feel for the practical implications of ability, as well as some of the controversies, the chapter now includes discussion of associations with a wider array of variables. For example, the chapter discusses relationships between IQ and variables such as life satisfaction, accidents, disease and life span.

    The team decision-making section now includes discussion of consensus decisions and factors that influence consensus decision outcomes. The section on team communication now includes discussion of the role of 'emotion' and 'rumors' in the communication process. The section also discusses the role of technology, specifically user centered Web 2.0 tools and other collaboration technologies, in the communication process, and how companies such as AT&T, GE, FedEx, and Coca-Cola are leveraging these technologies to improve team effectiveness.
  • A Focus on Performance and Commitment. Being a good performer and working for an employer that inspires commitment are critical concerns for employees and managers alike. Colquitt takes a unique approach by devoting Chapter 2 to job performance and Chapter 3 to organizational commitment. Once these two key outcomes have been spotlighted, all of the remaining chapters are linked back to them, illustrating the importance of the chapter topics to performance and commitment.

    An Integrative Model of OB. The table of contents is organized around an integrative model, described in Chapter 1 and featured on the back cover, that provides a roadmap for the course, showing students how all of the chapters fit together. The positioning of every topic makes sense, and it's easy for students to understand how the topics they are studying fit into the bigger picture.

    Contemporary Content. When creating the book, the author team asked themselves what OB texts would look like if all of them were written today. Many OB texts include outdated and disproven models, just to maintain continuity with earlier editions. Such content frustrates students, who don't understand why they should learn theories that are not valid. Colquitt omits such theories, devoting more space to contemporary topics that are useful for employees and managers.

    Features/Insert Boxes that Students Want to Read. Each chapter includes special insert box features like OB on Screen and OB Internationally that help 'bring OB to life' for the reader. Many of these features have been praised by students for their ability to demonstrate OB content in a fun and appealing manner. Colquitt also uses an informal style that students enjoy reading, while focusing on company examples that students find interesting

    o OB on Screen highlights and illustrates OB concepts taken from movie quotes or through use of movie scenes from recent and classic films.

    o OB at the Bookstore links the content in each chapter to a mainstream, popular business book.
